The only episode of golduck I remember from when I was a kid was when misty's psyduck faked evolved, and mostly because I spent the whole episode going "There's no way that's misty's psyduck" while getting more annoyed how long it was taking for them to figure out this random golduck didn't belong to misty.

Pokeshipping is an oddball because it truly is one of the oldest animation ships to ever exist and one of the first ships to actually be referred to as a ship, but it's also not every big by modern day ship standards.
You could argue it dwarfs other pokemon ships, and that the average adult automatically assumes Misty was Ash's girlfriend already, but it's no Zutara. Maybe a Barbie and Ken at best

Isn't it surprising how 26 years in, the Pokemon franchise has been able to completely ignore any form of LGBTQ themes? Not even Okamas which have been common in Anime since the very start of animation exist in Pokemon. Is quite outstanding really. I know other kid franchises like YGO to name one haven't really tackled such themes but even Precure has had one or two suspicious characters. Why do you think is the reason for this?

Johto is so weird:

Brock's Zubat evolves twice despite Brock barely ever using it in a 30 ep span. Yet Onix doesn't evolve in Johto despite Steelix being a new Pokemon at the time.

Misty doesn't capture a single pokemon till Corsola, over 100 eps into Johto in the last year.

The show was riding on the coatails of the fad at the time so they knew the show wouldn't end unless they chose to end it. Johto has a weird mix of really good or funny episodes mixed with some really boring/tedious eps right next to it.

It's like every other episode is good, and every other episode is boring. There's no consistency in Johto at all because you can get 2-3 great eps in a row or 2-5 boring eps in a row.

The only parts of Johto people remember are some of captures/evos (Chikorita/Bayleef), or the arcs - Lugia/Silver, that water tournament with misty, Larvitar.

Everything else is just a forgotten blur. You can really feel the lack of Shudo and just...NO plan to do anything thanks to GS Ball being retconned into the Celebi 4th movie.

In a way, Johto was a precursor to BW getting fucked over thanks to no Team Plasma vs Team Rocket ever airing and leaving that series as aimless and starting the trAsh downfall.

There's some Johto eps stand out due to humor (Gligarman episode, Ursaring episode), or because of recurring characters like Butch/Cassidy in the flaming Moltres ep, or the eps with Casey, etc.

You can probably condense Johto to 83 eps to match the original Kanto run and get a really good season out of it.

Even though Misty/Brock are really underused this saga, when they do get an episode it's usually really good. The Stantler ep for Brock, the Temacu episode, the Sick Daze ep, the ghost Ninetails episode, for Misty the crybaby Marill ep, the Totodile Duel, the Seaking catching contest, the Whirl Cup, the eps with Sakura, etc.

Some Johto eps are really good but since they're in the middle of the season people don't really remember them.

It's the same as any other niche interest board. You get a couple of actual schizos who cannot grasp reality and a few people who intentionally stir shit just to stir up the schizos and the gullible good ones. They tend to loud out the people who put thought into their posts, because they just spam shit without much shame.

Last month as I was watching through XY, I'd come on here and post thoughts. You'd be surprised how not-shit opinions you'll get, even with the discourse around that series, so long as you don't engage with the schizos.

"Ring Masters" is another Johto gem. Ash brings back his Snorlax to enter a sumo competition and it beats a Feraligatr in the episode. I really loved these random eps Ash would bring back a Pokemon from Oak's lab just for one episode.

Because it'd be pretty sad if the so-called "Rock type" gym leader had no Rock pokemon at all. If Onix evolved into Steel type, what does he have left? Geodude? Sudowoodo? Lmao.

At least Misty stuck to her Water theme and kept catching Water pokemon. With Brock tho, it seemed he loved catching anything BUT rock types.

One thing I like about Johto is it also does feel like Ash is no longer the lucky/rookie boy he was in Kanto. Ash really does win most of his Gym badges and battles by skill now (Pryce kinda gave up but besides him), and Ash only lost to Whitney because he couldn't handle Miltank's Rollout at first.

I'm actually noticing Ash barely loses in Johto at all, even against filler characters. He feels already like he's a more seasoned trainer this time around. The only "weird" battle he loses is Bulbasaur to a boy with a Skiploom in a grass tournament. Besides that if you count Psyduck beating Kingler in the Whirl Cup, but I'll excuse that because it was Misty's arc.

Johto didn't hit the reset button at all.

I'm watching the Johto ep Brock gives Vulpix back to Suzie. In this episode everyone calls the competition, a "Contest" and everyone says how they're entering a Pokemon Contest. When the characters are on stage it also looks like a prototype version of what a Contest appeal stage would be.

Yeah I think the filler formula kinda gets stale after Shudo leaves because the other writers had no idea how to use TR. In AG/DP, TR appear for like 5 minutes just to get blasted off.

In the OS, TR literally stick around for half the episode, or do some crazy batshit insane scheme before being blasted off so they're more enjoyable. Upon rewatching most of the OS I'd forgotten the sheer mass of screentime Team Rocket got back then.

I don't know about this new anime, it's so bubblegum and poppy and colorful. It doesn't really have that grungy feel of the original anime. That feeling of being in the wilderness with your friends surrounded by dangerous wild animals and being unable to rely on adults
In episode 1 Ash was nearly eaten by birds, that was the kind of harsh world this was supposed to be, Liko gets dialed back to evil hitmen... real life already has evil hitmen. It loses the appeal and that X-factor that made it "pokemon"

And Danger comes in many other forms since then. We have Pokémon battles now where they can cause stray fire harm and actually leaves dents in places while just battling which in itself is already underlining the sense of threat and danger.

I personally feel like it's more of a worldbuilding error than nostalgia. In OS Gyarados and Aerodactyl were recently discovered, Pokemon in general were marvels to science. In the modern day kids in kanto have schools with rare pokemon imported from paldea. This feels like a nitpick but if we are to assume Ash is running around somewhere out there then all this development happened in a year?
Gen 1 gives the vibe of a modern world with killer plants and fire breathing dinosaurs in the surrounding woodland. Gen 9 gives the vibe that aside from criminal activity this world is mostly under control

Ash is stuck in a changing time capsule on itself. And considering how each region doesn't say much about the development of others regions outside of Bill's PC, its just Regions being progressive in various pacing. I mean shit, Cerise Lab exists and it's practically neighbors with Oak's lab, but outside of the stuff Ash is bringing or sudden upgrades in interiors or communication devices, in there's no real changes. Each series felt like a time bubble on itself and comparing it because OLM or whoever thought of the eternal summer nonsense just muddies the sense of time. We had Lei and he's still 10, why is it an issue to begin with comparing time and progress within an anime that just won't let time move forward with the rare exceptions for certain characters? The TrAshnime is just a cluster fuck of interview rules, circumstances and rectons on matters of time and events.

I get nitpick sentiment, but cmon, Ash has supposedly not changed a single bit except for shorts and maybe, just maybe his attitude, but it's a floating sense of nonsense, rectons and just bloated shit.
I mean, with the last Latias episode confirming that all non-AU movies are canon, they are giving up lots of Inconsistencies and sometimes are petty incenses to rewatch

Daiki Yamashita still being actively involved in the anime makes me wonder... is it possible back before PM19 debuted, they talked with him about a "permanent" role in the anime, telling him that he'd be voicing a character that was intended to replace Ash after PM19, but because Goh wasn't well received, these plans were scrapped, but still had to find a way to honor the contract/agreement? I admit I don't know how these things work, so maybe someone that knows more can comment? I just wonder why they decided to keep him, rather than get a cheaper VA to fill these roles.

We should have gotten a Paldea series with Ash, Dawn, Arven and a new character in Paldea academy where Ash has to deal with the pressure of being the world champion as many trainers comes to challenge him including game characters like Nemona or OC with legendary Pokemon like Tobias. Even better the main group finds a Koroidon/Miraidon that they use to travel to various cities on Paldea.

Seriously, why is Ash still walking? He can easily go one city to another with his Dragonite, he might can travel to other region since Dragonite can circle the globe 16 hours.

Chloe's reactions to Ash/Goh's hyperactive behavior was funny. The faces she'd make, the annoyed and sarcastic remarks... she was great in the first half of JN before becoming bland as can be in the second half. Even better, the first half of JN actually did a few episodes that focused on her character, rather than making the damn Eevee and its evolutions the center of attention. The second of JN shit the bed big time when it came to many things, and Chloe's character was one of them.

I honestly don't see what makes it the best Eevee, but the bigger issue I have is Chloe's character development basically went out the window once Eevee entered the picture. Not only did her personality do a 180, but she wasn't even the focus of her own episodes anymore; it was all about Eevee, and whatever evolution was getting the focus that episode.
