Tajiri told Sugimori to tone down elements from his sketches of the Pokémon world. He's the one that was pushing for a more friendlier Pokémon world while Sugimori was drawing a more aggressive world.

Definitely. Camping next to a babbling brook in the middle of an endless forest with your closest Pokémon and maybe some traveling companions is true Pokémon.

Sugi really is the one into cooler and more aggressive shit. He complained about gen 2 feeling too restrictive with all the babymons and the more simpler designs, it's why he made the gen 3 legendaries the way they are

Yokai Watch is pretty kino too. It's definitely a more accurate experience for the age of the protagonist. In Pokemon you leave home and wander all over the region. In Yokai Watch you explore the town your family lives in and get called down if you cross the street without waiting for the walk signal.
