Turn off auto save to make the game run smoother, but save often as these are also the only pokemon games I've ever had crash on me. Also, rush gyms and explore later- catch rate is tied to gym badge progression (and only gym badges, not titan badges or star bases) or you'll end up spending 30 great and 27 pokeballs to catch a paralyzed level 16 Stantler with red hp like I did.
