For the vast majority of people, the anime WAS Pokemon. The games were always lackluster when it came to RPGs of the period, not everyone was gonna trade or even have a gb, but the anime would always be on TV and actually give you a world and adventure with all these monsters. The anime did most of the heavy lifting when it came to marketing
