almost picked Mauville for that reason, but then i realized it's just cardinal backtracking to finally head east.
>have to battle wally to enter the gym
>have to beat the gym leader in order to advance north and access a shortcut to the west (rock smash)
>need surf to start wattson's side quest to get a thunder stone from the unnerving new mauville and a tm containing thunderbolt upon completion

I liked that players could EASILY miss the new mauville side quest if they just didn’t talk to Wattson, in new games it would a mandatory interruption.

Actually, I may consider Amphy sidequest as a actual Gym puzzle than quest btw it makes it the biggest Gym puzzle made
