All the 1st evos are top tier.
2nd evos only Croconaw is weird, I don't know why they went "lol Grug caveman" in the middle of the line then immediately dropped it.
3rd evos only Feraligatr is good, Typhosion and Meganium are way worse than their 2nd evos. Especially Meganium for dropping the leaf crest thing.

Unpopular opinion, but I always liked all three of them. I like dinosaurs, and Chikorita was clearly the girly one, so no issue with the plant brontosaurus with a flower around its neck. Feraligatr is just plain cool - who wouldn't like a big, badass croc bro? And then there's my bro, Typhlosion, who spews literal flames from his back whenever he gets pissed off. Really, what's not to love?
Now, if we were talking about the Unova or Kalos starters, I'd get the hate, but these guys? They're ok in my book.

How fucking old are you? I was 11 when the games came out in the US, and I've still got another 25-30 years before I'll be old enough to consider that...assuming anyone in my generation is going to ever be in a position where retirement is an option to begin with at this point.

They are solid designs, but aren't unique compared to other Starter designs. This is mostly because Starter Pokemons are now having distinct themes such as Samurai, Ninja, Wizards etc.

The base form are quite good, the evolutions though...
Chikorita's are just a less interesting rethread of the bulbasaur line, but it still might be better than typhlosion and feraligatr, who are the very definition of "it just gets bigger".
Especially typhlosion, it and quilava are strictly worse executions of cyndaquil's concept.

always looked kinda dumb to me, design feels bland and empty

they're fine

huge improvement, take away the leaf, the neck buds and even the much cuter face and just looking at how Bayleef's bod comapres to Chickorita, Bayleef's just looks more like a cool dino body and the color choice is also better
>Quilava and Croconaw
they are also cool but so were the previous forms so I won't go in depth
>Meganium, Typhlosion and Feraligatr
all are huge let downs. all the final stages of this trio are boring compared to the previous ones the drop in quality is so bad, it actually feels bad evolving them all the way and you wanna stop at the cool mid stage
