It's because of their iconic status coupled with internet contrarians that no one seems to be willing to stick up for them.
Right out of the gate, you had 151 unique creatures with a large amount of variety, from their designs to types and yet they all feel like they belong together. Having only a team of 4 artists with Sugimori doing all of the official art made them feel cohesive despite the large amount and this was all done on a system that was even underpowered by 1989 portable standards. Red & Blue really felt like they were made to take advantage of what couldn't be possible on an NES, Genesis, SNES, or N64. (Link cable with trading, that is)
