many Gen 2 pokemon were probably conceptualized during Gen 1, but Gen 1 had around 40 pokemon cut and none of them ended up in Gen 2.

This is probably a bait thread, but I'll ask one question :
When someone praises Gen 1 dex, why are the same pokemon always showing up? Why no one brings up stuff like Jynx, Magmar, Chansey or Exeggcute?
Even stuff like Oddish, Voltorb or Spearow's lines are never shown.

Because actual genwunners haven't been interested in the series in nearly 30 years and they mostly remember the ones that got the most play in advertisements and/or prominent/memorable roles in the anime

Metagross shouldn't be lumped in with the top. gen 3 was the last time they actually tried. I remember seeing at after the massive disappointment that was gen 2 and being amazed as a kid.
