Why did the anime choose toe lazily bring in Steven and Iris as Champions instead of actively explaining how they became Champions when Hoenn and Unova already had ones? Just completely hand waved. Are they scared of game lore or something?

Journeys was just weird like that about its game references.
Remember when they showed the Emerald Battle Frontier despite the fact that in the anime the facilities were spread throughout Kanto instead an island near Hoenn?

The idea of a Masters 8 should have happened in Gen 4, where Ash should have won against Tobias in the Semis and then whoever was in the Finals during the League. Should have looked like this:

They could have easily wrapped up Ash’s journey there. Was the perfect time to reboot the series for Gen 5 with a new protagonist.

The Unova league was conquered by the guy who brought five pokemon and the guy with an eevee team. It was shit.
Steven stopped being a rock autist for a bit after x and y reinvigorated him. He promptly beat Wallace’s ass and reclaimed the champion title. There’s an episode about Wallace being butthurt about it.

They still needed Ash's gang to travel around and for May to have towns to do contests in.
The alternative would have been to expand the nameless Battle Frontier island into a whole ass region. What they did was objectively simpler and better for marketing.

Honestly by that point they should have brought in the game protags.
