Compare that to Gen 5 part 1 where your options are your starter, patrat, lillipup, Purrloin, Muuna, a monkey, pidove, blitzel, rogenrolla, and woobat before the 2nd gym.

Previously you might have been able to include the dream world but it is no longer functional - but even on an emulator, you can have access to EVERY SINGLE POKEMON I listed without hacks or randomizers, all you need to do is load a GBA rom into the second slot.
If you want to add in BW2, then Platinum gets added to the count and still mogs gen 5's pokemon variety before the 2nd gym.
