It was the 4 obligatory shillmons (zard, pika, lucario, M2) as well as other very popular mons (Gengar, toise, blaziken, garde, garchomp), but it also has less hyper mainstream favorites (Weavile, Machamp, Scizor, etc) and some actual oddball picks (Croagunk, Chandelure, Aegislash etc). You also have picks specifically for anime fans (Gunk, Braixen) and the most popular non-kaiju legendaries (Suicuine, Darkrai)

There's going with nothing but shill picks, and there's going with Pokemon that are popular and people want without being entirely predictable. Pokken did the latter, and that's fine.

Most new fighting games have a roster of like 8-12 characters, 16 on launch and 23 after all the DLC/updates is fine.

>Roster It covers nearly every type and a variety of body shapes and popularity levels (shillmons like lucario, pika, zard; popular mons like Gardevoir, Blaziken, Garchomp; more niche favorites like Weavile, Chandelure, Scizor, etc)

I can also give a writeup more specifically aimed at existing fighting game players,, but this does touch on some FG specific stuff too.

Frankly it's better as a traditional competitive fighting game (and yes, it IS a traitional competitive fighter despite how it looks, has cancels, just-frames, attack height, per character movelists and command inputs, etc) then it is as a Pokemon game for Pokemon fans, but I think there's a lot for pokemon fans who aren't into fighting games to enjoy as long as you go in knowing the replay value comes from the multiplayer and trying to git gud

This is the reason Pokken is the only fighting game I learned to play.
