Teddiursa is a decent earlygame catch, has a good base attack of 80 and evolves relatively early at 30. Ursaring has 75 spA so can make use of ice/fire punch to hit normal resists.
Geodude/graveler mogs the first two gyms, has a solid advantage against the 3rd and 4th, and wrecks team rocket.
Slowpoke evolves at level 37, which is pretty much the e4 in johto and it won't be too helpful all game. However, slowbro is much more useful, and can be caught in slowpoke well as soon as you're able to use surf at level 20-24. Or just get Lapras.
