i really, REALLY want the chess theming of this line to be intentional
i like to think this thing sitting on its hair is meant to be evocative of the base of a chess piece, as well as the king piece being barely mobile, sitting on it's ass until it's directly threatened.
now they just need to make a ninja queen, a pagoda/oni rook and a shogun knight, and then fighting/steel variants for all of them with medieval, more traditionally chess theming to represent the white team

Suffer from a common problem of Crossgens/Megas/Gmax's where the original line was already designed as being "complete" and taking the concept from start to finish. So there's nowhere for the design to go except for adding ugly clutter to the design. The Good Cross Gen evos are usually the ones that basically decide to make a whole new single stage mon that's only tangentially related to the original like Scizor, Steelix, Yanmega etc. And the good Gmax's tended to be ones for Gen 8 newcomers because that meant they were designed with the Max form in mind. Though this also hurt some like Centiskorch since his gmax is the intended endpoint of his lines concept, meaning that in future games with no gmax he essentially is visually stuck in a mid-evo.

Sorry but the chess names were the localization team trying to turn a Japanese pun about bandit samurai henchmen and chiefs into a reference westerners would understand. The stool thing is a literal stool that Samurai generals would sit on in their campaign tents.

I was actually really excited to see a Bisharp evolution but having it sitting on its own hair is really off putting. Like why? I know Gamefreak does these kind of things to be different or unique but their own creativity just kills it with some Pokemon
