what's so great about it?

Give mostly already strong Pokemon even more broken forms,

Mega Evolutions are the "strong get stronger". Very rarely did some shitmon get a mega, and not every one did. Remember how many people asked for a Mega Flygon? That sure didn't happen.

Z-moves attempt to give something to everyone. There's still some specific Z-moves, but you're favourite shitmon can finally kill the enemy in a cinematic fashion.

Dynamaxing is the same principle. Everyone can Dynamax, but only some Pokemon can change forms and Gigantamax. Like Z-moves, you're favourite shitmon gets to shine no matter what.

Terastallization currently gives something to everyone with no individuality. Any Pokemon can become any type now, and use moves of that type with Tera Blast. Nobody gets any unique Tera forms (yet).

So as you can see, megas had to go.

Megas sucked ass. More often than not looked ugly and blueballed you by being a temporary form if you did like them. Gigantamax isn't much better, but at least having a more focused goal for aesthetics makes it a bit easier to swallow as just a gimmick.

Regional variants accomplish the same thing as megas. New spins on old designs, new stats, new typings. And they actually maintain their new design outside of battle. I can only assume the people still hung up on megas are genuine autists who got attached to the concept rather than the actual function of it.

The truth is its easier to add some visual effects on a pokemon model than doing an entire new model for each pokemon. They say its because they want the different gens to be different despite thz games being the same since the gameboy

Megas was the worst thing about the an otherwise okay Pokemon game. It had little connection with the lore of the games and is the most confusing gimmick in the series bc of retcons between XY and ORAS.

Issue with that is GF loves power creep. Some mega forms would be no better than any gen 9 regular pokemon. Most megas would be worse. Most megas were already not worth using to begin with and are not up to todays standards. EX. regular Gallade would be more viable than Mega bc of sharpness.

Is a more thought out mechanic (competitive and lore wise) ruined by their love for power creep (Zacian + Caly).

Tbf Game Freak did want to make one because there was a notable character in ORAS with Flygon as his ace, but they had artist's block.

no they don.t. Megas were an opportunity to fix the problems an older long neglected Pokemon made and elevate that Pokemon status.
Regionals are functional different Pokemon that just so happen to be related to an old favorite, any buff the original gets is incidental. .

of course in practice Megas were just an excuse to shill CHARIZARD ad make already good Pokémon completely broken while throwing out in a handful of charity cases.
