You can lose some of the unimportant friendly matches against Hop and still continue the game, but around his angst arc you start being forced to win before you can continue
With Blue in the yellow version he evolves his Eevee differently based on the outcome of your first two battles against him. If you won both he picks Jolteon for resistance to your Pikachu, if you lost both he decides your Pikachu ain't shit and picks Vaporeon, and he goes with Flareon if you're 1-1 against him
