Seeing Dialga and Palkia for the first time as a 12 year old surely was an experience. This era truley was a time to be alive. I would love going back to 2006 only to relive Gen 4. So many memories of playing these games with my friends

It just came out at the best time. Didn't come out after gen 2 and invite the wrath of aging genwunners. First gen on a really successful console. First pokemon game with wifi. Had things that would really become popular with kids at the time like Lucario, Darkrai, Gods, some edgier stuff like Cyrus and Old Chateau, etc. It has some legitimate accomplishments too like the popularity of Dawn and Cynthia. The anime was really solid too.

I lived to connect to free mcdonalds wifi to try to trade 'mons on the GTS since when we got wifi, the router only supported WEP passwords xd. truly a great game ahead of its time

Actually it only supported WEP. WPS/WPA were the ones it didn't support. Most people connecting to PokeClassic network use mobile hotspots.

The DS sold like twice the amount of units as the GBA yet people weren't buying the DS pokemon games at that rate. You can't blame them when you consider Gen 4 consisted of a shitty boring region that was an absolute chore to explore with no payoff along with a remake of West Kanto, all running on a shitty slow engine.

These games made me stop playing pokemon for a while. I didn't come back until gen 7 came out, at which point I finally played the previous two gens to catch up.

Multiplayer that didn't require peripherals and online trading basically removed the biggest issue a lot of people had with previous games: if you didn't have a friend/local group, you were shit out of luck.

But god, I wish it was a better gen that did that. D/P was famously broken on release, Plat was a band-aid on a bullet wound and HG/SS somehow made Johto SLOWER.

Agreed.
Creative storytelling has never been a strong point for this franchise, but "evil villain trying to kill or control god(s)" is generic even by Pokémon standards. The trope's execution in game is even worse. Cyrus's plan basically fails by itself, because he was dumb and we get to catch god with the guaranteed catch rate ball he gave us the previous meeting. It's extremely underwhelming.

Based. They kept improving on the FeMC's as well with Hilda, Rosa, and Serena. And then come Gen 7 they stopped making long hair the default option for some reason. And then they got rid of skirts entirely for Gen 9.
