There's less focus on adventure and more on self-improvement, though each game does let you go on excursions with your monster which can lead to finding items/raising stats/unlocking new options. There's plenty of variety in the monster designs too: there's cool mons, there's cute mons, there's weirdo mons, and the breeding mechanic lets you give that personal touch to whatever you're raising.
