HOWEVER, I do prefer playing first version over the 3rd versions for
Gens 2-4 in specific scenarios
I prefer GS to Crystal if I’m just doing a casual playthrough since I don’t particularly like the changes Crystal made aside from more interesting encounter tables.
I prefer RS to emerald if I’m doing a casual playthrough since Emerald has a wonky difficulty curve compared to RS and also utterly rapes the pacing post-Lilycove
I prefer DP to platinum if I’m doing a slower playthrough where I catch and train more than 6 mons since they have a more forgiving level curve than platinums.
And that’s not even mentioning stuff like exclusives and other smaller details. Overall I think it’s wild that some people say the third versions are worse, but it’s also not like there’s never any reason to play the initial releases, the differences (particularly in gen 3 and 4) are prominent enough that you’ll get a different experience by playing either.
