BW2 Riolu. Early Release bonus Torchic in XY. Really, Magikarp in most games. Cuz Level 20 is stupidly early for evolution all things considered. Played Emerald again recently and evolving Magikarp was relatively easy, had Gyarados before Team Magma fight at the volcano.

I recently played the original Gold, I had never played it because back when I was a kid my parents would only buy me garbage multicarts from flea markets for the game boy, never "real" games, so I only played pokemon when I could afford buying my own games, anyway Heracross is one of my bros and one of the starts of my HeartGold team, so when I caught one in the original Gold I was pretty excited but holy fuck this thing gets no moves for the longest time, you have to carry Counter and 3 Normal moves until you get Rock Smash, and even then Rock Smash isn't the best move, I was pretty disappointed

Does Heracross even really do anything impressive in gen 2? It has high attack, but no STAB, and any random Normal pokemon will do almost the same damage with the same moves that it does get.

I just spammed Fury Cutter, works pretty well as long as the mon you're using the first hits on can't hit super effectively.
Sort of feels like you're playing on Whitney Miltank mode. Even bug resists fold eventually, you can just sweep major fights like that.

Heracross is enough of a beast to get away with a LOT. Maybe not struggle, but Fury Cutter is conveniently in the gym right before the Headbutt tutor, which is what you need to use to catch the Heracross, and is good enough for a long time.

He has much less convincing showings vs Clair and the E4 but at that point he's been carrying you for most of the game and still puts in solid work afterwards thanks to getting Close Combat at 37. I had to stop using him frequently because I knew he'd solo a lot of fights and my other mons needed to shine too.

In Red/Blue/Yellow you don't need one. You only need a wild Weedle, the last trainer in Viridian Forest, one of certain other wild Pokemon, something with growl, and some additional Pokemon to split up exp among.

In Sun and Moon, there was this mechanic called SOS battles where if a 'mon was on low health, they could call for an ally. On Route 3, you can find Bagon at a 1% chance, and if you wait long enough, you can get a very low level Salamence for free.

I'm pretty sure that's a normal human response. A prize isn't rewarding if it's just handed to you. How many people actually use the Jirachi you're just given in Floaroma? Switch training a magikarp is painful, but that's part of what made gyarados so cool, your efforts have been rewarded. Without it, he's just another big hitter

BW2 is full of ridiculous early game options. You can have a Lucario and a Crobat before the third gym. Pick up a Growlithe and Mareep and you're basically set for the rest of the game You know, if you chose Oshawott like a normal person

It falls off eventually, but Lillipup is way above everything you can get in BW1. The early routes are full of shitmons and late-bloomers up until the Desert Resort, but Lillipup can carry you through the early game no problem.

Rattata slapped hard as hell in Gen 1.

Hyper Fang is way too OP. Base 80 Damage at lvl 14 with 10% chance to flinch. Only trade-off is 10% accuracy. Then it evolves at lvl 20 into base 81 attack. Truly the Early Game King.

No, in RBY you can get a level 100 Nidoking early with a variation of the trainer fly glitch, with no need for a Moon Stone. You get poisoned by the Weedle, get a wild encounter just in front of the last trainer in Viridian Forest and let that Pokemon kill you. The poison is because it takes a lot of tries to get an encounter on that tile and when you finally succeed its often a Metapod or Kakuna that can't damage you. Then you make your way back, fighting a Pidgey or something else with a special of 7 on the way and growling at it 6 times. That gets you a level 1 Nidoking, which will level up to 100 if it gains a small enough amount of exp. Too much exp and it grows to level 2, so splitting up that exp between some other stuff can help.

You can a moonstone and Nidoran before gym 2 in RBYGSC and their remakes. You can technically get them in BW2 pretty early in as well through the hidden grotto I think. Not sure beyond that.

I also find trying to raise a rhyhorn is not worth the chore for how late/lowlevel in the game it is, garbage speed/special and terrible movepool. Rock throw is incredibly useful (albeit the shit accuracy) and earthquake by LVL 36 is dam near broken for the geo line.

You can get a gastly in gen 2 before the first gym.

It's funny, I highly disagree. played emerald recently and my mudkip/marshtomp was the only mon that had trouble staying alive in every battle. Tailow/swellow were good at first but Gyarados was the real MVP. due to no phys/special split you have to be really careful using gyarados since water is always "special" and he's not a special attacker, but once you learn how to build him, and then get that Dragon Dance, you can solo the entire elite four with just him (source: I did it myself recently)

You could also skip Misty until you've cleared S.S. Anne and that route next to Vermillion, then go back. By the time you've got back to Cerulean you'll be closing to Lv. 40, your NidoKANG or Nidoqueen will be faster than Misty's Pogeymanz and Dig will be trong enough to OHKO them
