Also, it is as "non-canon" as the anime, for example. And what the fuck do you mean by "canon"? If only core games story is as canon, then only TCG arguably counts from non-game materials.
Anyway, it is a licensed product using the Pokemon trademark legally. It's not some doujin shit. So, I don't see your problem.
And when it comes to "canon" stuff, then this particular manga actually does its best to keep as close to the games story as possible, to the point of being quite boring plotwise. An advantage is that it shows game elements typically omitted in other media. One drawback is that battles suck in this manga. The way Ash beat the Elite Four is a fuckin' joke. I guess the mangaka wasn't good with this type of stuff.
