>>53760901I think all of the remakes, not just BDSP, suffer from remaking things too closely. Ironically, I think ORAS actually changes the most about the base adventure, but it gets a ton of shit for not changing enough. Gens 1 and 2 have more of an emphasis on the collecting, so I wish they could have spiced that up more when revisiting them in a new context. Mr. Mime, Farfetch'd, and Jynx are all hidden away as bonuses for example, that's really cool. Tangela is on one patch of grass towards the end of the game, and is designed to be completely useless because it's the only pure Grass type, and why would a plant with no natural poisons or magic powers be able to fight for you? The safari zone hides away super rare Pokemon that are a pain in the ass to obtain.
Crobat, Steelix, Politoed, Bellossom, Slowking, Blissey, Espeon, Umbreon, Scizor, Pichu, Igglybuff, Magby, Elekid, and Smoochum should have been normally available. A shitmon like Golbat being stuck like that is tragic. They could have made the process of acquiring these Pokemon more of that kind of bonus that some Gen 1 Pokemon originally felt like. That or other post-gen 1 Pokemon hidden away elsewhere. There was also an opportunity to make the Safari Zone more interesting, which never happened in any generation until they just gave up on it entirely.
I'd say it's nice to get to use the updated movesets, but decent movesets for nearly every Pokemon you can use in-game aren't a thing until Gen 5 anyway.
The updated visuals sadly translate the GB towns a little too faithfully. A bit disappointing coming off of the greater visual variety offered by Hoenn's towns. You could really have put more into the idea of Pallet, Veridian, and Pewter being quieter places, Cerulean and Vermillion being a little more lively, and Celadon and Saffron being full-on mega cities.
If I want to replay Kanto, I tend to just play RBY. I still think the remakes are good introductory games though.
