you can literally surf in the middle of the road in gen 1, of course I do greatly prefer an actual fucking bridge like HGSS, but the map designers clearly weren't clued in on this intention if it were there

Reasonable idea, but in this case it's carried by childhood memories and not much more.
I won't say the original design is bad, it gets the job done and it's more exciting than the "Underground Path", but it's pretty plain.
