how did sceptile got so popular in the first place? the anime is mostly grovyle and i don't really remember sceptile being that iconic

Sceptile's always been popular. 28th overall per the Pokemon of the Year thing, placing it just above fellow starter Blaziken.
Anime helped it a ton, not just during the Hoenn arc, but also Sawyer had a Mega Sceptile during the OrAs days.

It's actually my favorite among the hoenn mons, and I love Swampert a lot, that should tell you how much I love my Christmas tree dragon
