I have a half-baked idea I'm too lazy to fully flesh out, so I'll post it here. What if they introduced Sub-Types? I imagine it working like this

>it's almost like a 3rd Type, but (mostly) does not actually change a Pokemon's weaknesses/resistances. In cases where it DOES interact with the Type chart it's still in extremely simple and limited ways.
>most mons do not have a Sub-Type by default, but you can change their Sub-Type with [insert mechanic] to any of the 18 Types. A Sub-Type grants a 10% resist and a x1.1 STAB to whatever Type you have selected. This also determines Hidden Power.
>certain Pokemon DO always have a Sub-Type by default when you catch them. These are pretty much what you expect---Gyarados always has a Dragon Sub-Type, Salazzle has Dark, Flygon family has Bug, Malamar has Water. It's a way of suggesting that this is their "3rd Type" in a way. Pokemon who have a Sub-Type by default like this have a 20% resist/STAB boost instead. They can still change it.

And as part of the same system, I was thinking also taking all those fan-made concepts that don't really work as actual, real Types and making them Sub-Types. So shit like Cosmic, Light, Sound, whatever. These ONLY exist as Sub-Types, and they do not interact with weaknesses/resistances in the Type chart. A Pokemon cannot change into or out of them, a Pokemon species has to have it by default and it cannot change. And these would all have a different effect. Maybe Light increases healing from healing moves. Maybe Gemstone Sub-Type boosts the damage from Power Gem and grants an innate Clear Body effect. Dinosaur Sub-Type doubles chances of Ancient Power raising stats. That's where this whole thing falls flat cuz I don't have a lot of ideas for these.

What sayeth you about these half-baked ideas
