Diamond and Pearl brought a ton of people back after Gen 3 where many either grew out of it or were dissapointed with it.
Oh, and 2006 / 07 was when the DS was absolutely hot, everyone had one.
Though neither DP or XY compare to the craze that GO ignited in the summer of 2016.

In the mainstream, Gen 3-5 are considered dark ages not for the quality of the games, but the popularity of the series. It was lower between the end of Pokemania and XY/Pokemon Go.

Also, I find it really funny that the shitposter that was saying BDSP sold better than Legends has to update the image because Legends sold enough copies to have it's data updated while BDSP has apparently sold so few copies that Nintendo didn't even mention it in the report. Still shocked that Legends did so well after being released in Fuck You It's January, but it's probably some Japanese thing because it's a pretty Japanese game.

It's also worth noting that SM 100% would have outsold XY if USUM weren't announced half a year later. SM sold CRAZY numbers in the wake of the Pokemon Go hype (it was the first Pokemon game to sell faster than GS), but its total sales ended up being on the low side due to how quickly the upgraded version was announced. It had a very realistic chance of outselling DP if had made it to a second holiday season.

I think it's just that Pokemon games have a very clear ceiling, everyone that wants it gets it, meanwhile Mario Kart console games are usually stuck on floppy-ish underperforming machines like N64 and Gamecube and Wii U, but has a much higher ceiling as a game as you can see from MK doing mad numbers on the Wii and the Switch. My fucking grandpa likes Mario Kart and he despises videogames.
