HGSS were the last good Pokemon games, every installment after that was much worse than the last
And YES, they were my favorite games as a kid too

But I can’t. It’s easily a great upgrade to Gen 2 that improves the game in every way and I can’t think of any game I’ve enjoyed since I’ve played either

I think the same way. Platinum and HG/SS were peak then the games were mediocre and then after SWSH they were irredeemable.
