Probably one of the shittiest ways to write out a Pokemon in the anime, early seasons had dumb shit like Ash giving up his Primape and Haunter but the latter was at least connected to the overall plot and had a very good episode before it, the ping pong shit felt like they straight up could not think of anything to do so they looked at how Ambipom has 4 "hands" and went with fucking ping pong.
Even more weird when you remember the Ambipom was originally Ash's and followed him as an Aipom all through Hoenn, only to get traded to Dawn when they realized Ash's Aipom wanted to do contests and Dawn's Buizel wanted to battle. The Ambipom arguably had more "history" and character than most other Pokemon in the DP season and yet got the worst, laziest send off possible.
It's one of the many reasons Gen 4 is shit and the only reason people like it is because it's their first gen, but I digress.
