In order for sales to drop within a franchise with an established strong start, it would need a colossal flop (often something that can only be appropriately setup beyond the context of the game, like marketing/hype leading into a major disappointment) and THEN evaporated goodwill to not buy into the next entries. See Sonic, and even they mostly recovered.
Pokemon has just succeeded to the incredible extent it has thanks to being more aggressive than all of its competitors. Yearly, quick cheaply made releases + being able to have forced all of their competition out of business or into niche areas = success that only Mario has beaten out by having a longer history and even it can't consistently pull the Pokemon numbers. I honestly don't even think Pokemania matters anymore in the context of Pokemon's consistent high sales.
