There, I fixed Johto. It's a great region with a lot going for it, so I definitely wouldn't call it "bad" like the clickbait thumbnail. But there's definitely some improvements you could make while still keeping to its original design philosophy.

I see Red as a post-game superboss. Actually, I'd call all of Kanto the post-game.

I dunno if that really fixes much, though. You've still got a flat level curve for the middle chunk of Johto, then the Kanto Gym Leaders are all weaker than bosses you just fought (except for Blue) in a region that's basically just a boss rush with one side quest thrown in.

I like Gen 2's design philosophy a lot. There were some problems with its execution, though. You basically can't use Dark types on your team unless you evolve your Eevee into Umbreon (or trade with someone way farther into the game), for example. Houndour and Murkrow could've easily been hidden somewhere in Johto with a low encounter rate and Gen 2's design philosophy would've been completely in-tact.

I don't think you wholly understand Gen 2's design philosophy if you want the main character to be readily able to use Evil-type Pokémon to defeat Team Rocket members who use Evil-type Pokémon. Narratively it doesn't work, and from a game design POV you're not (necessarily) supposed to be able to fully anticipate all the type interactions with them. They're meant to be something of a black box at the time of interaction.

The general populace treat the era in general between Platinum, HGSS and both Gen 5 games as the peak and trying to stick a bait argument is not going to work

The Johto games were the first games to even have battle facility you fucking idiot. The Battle Frontier was a logical extension of that and would have been in HGSS whether or not Platnium existed. Platinium was just lucky enough to be rushed out first.
