It wasn't "unexpected crazy popularity", it was an intentional overload of shilling for 3 years and then moving on to the next flavor of the gen while the series mascots continued on as usual.
It wasn't "punished for being more popular than [insert other shillmon]" because it was never on their levels, just a completely seperate world that they could get money out of while it lasted.
