Mono rock is arguably better defensively but you aren't even setting up with Lycanroc. It's pure offense, so having good offensive typing matters more.

Rock has the same problem as Ice. GF keeps trying to force the meme that it's a type for slow bulky mons even though it's been outclassed by Steel in that regard since gen 2.

It's a dumbass tradition.

A slow defensive Ice-type Pokémon will never succeed at its role unless it has bloated stats in all areas that matter like with Ice Rider Calyrex. Either give Ice some resistances or give Pokémon like Dewgong, Frosmoth, Aurorus, Avalugg (especially the Hisuian form) significant buffs to compensate.

ROM hacks also exist but I'm not sure of any that buffs Pokémon without it being a Smogon simulator.

What if rock types had a gimmick like laying down stealth rocks when damaged or a speed increase every 25% HP lost to reflect them losing mass as they are chipped away at. I'm not opposed to stat buffs for shitmons and bug as a type proves that some match up reconfiguring is necessary but I always appreciated weird type perks like grass types being immune to powder moves and the various weather-type interactions and poison types soaking up toxic spikes - I would even be OK with being able to poison poison types but having it heal instead.

I say buff Sp Def to Rock. It's fine if they are slow, it's fine if they are meant to be the physical wall.
But if you give me a wall, make it endure the hits, not break like if it was made of plastic.
Make Rock types the physical wall with special resistance, and Steel the special wall with physical resistance.
