What are your thoughts on wild encounters you can't battle?

I mean things like the Safari Zone or the Let's Go system.
Do you like them? Which one do you prefer?
It took a bit if warming up to but I kind of like the Let's Go system now as a break from encounters in the normal games, which is one of the main strengths of the Safari Zone in my opinion.

Not a fan of the motion controls. Also not a fan of anything that takes inspiration from Go. As for the other part, Safari Zone is a lesser evil but I’m glad it’s gone

The only good Safari Zone was the one in ORAS.
Chucking balls at wild critters and hoping that you catch them before they run away is the opposite of fun.

Catching pokemon is fine, having to catch the same pokemon a million times for candy or exp is wrong

Battle-less catching is fine as a change-up to the usual wild battles, but it's mostly dull as a main method

How can they be fixed? I wish the developers would just sit down and discuss how to improve the systems instead of just getting rid of them like what happened to the safari zone.
Maybe they could give it a system similar to SMT, where you must approach a pokemon and convince it to join you.

Not that you can't battle in arceus the system in arceus where you catch a mon without triggering an encounter is very fun for me
I'd love a mainline game that's similar, and if it included a safari zone in it too, I think that'd work really well.

Was never a fan.

So many rare types of pokemon were locked behind this shit mechanic where their capture depended on you performing a virgin sacrifice every time you set foot in the safari zone.

Depends on the game I suppose. If I was making a Pokemon game I would have the Arceus style catching- so maybe I would make the Safari Zone an on-rails literal "safari"..... you have to aim at them, or throw bait to lure them closer to your car to have a better shot.

If we are talking about the classic style games... I would add some ways to make the actual encountering of the Pokemon more interesting as opposed to the 'battles' themselves. Kind of like Emerald almost did with the Pokeblocks. Maybe add some sort of puzzle element where when a Pokemon performs X action you need to respond with Y or Z action.

I like them but get the hate. As a whole I love the early Safari Zones, in particular gen 1's. It was extremely atmospheric and had tons of unique pokemon.

I think GF found a good middle ground with the Bug-Catching Contest. Normal battles but with a strict party/item limits to change things up. If I had to design a new Safari Zone
>Given 20 Safari Balls and 20 Bait, no other items allowed
>No step limit or time limit
>Can't use your own party. Instead, you're offered a randomized selection of rental pokemon of which you choose 4.
>ALL wild encounters are double battles
>Wild mons can only flee any turn after their partner is fainted, but using Bait prevents fleeing for 3 turns
>Catch as much as you want so long as your team isn't fully fainted

i think the safari zone is one of the few places if not the only place in the entirety of RBY that doesn't use perfect squares/rectangles for grass patches. instead they're a bunch of irregular shapes

Huh, you know what I'd never really thought about it before but I guess the Let's Go games are basically just the Safari Zones in terms of catching mechanics, throwing food for the Pokémon and all

I think the mechanics are fun as a side thing but having played them as a full game I'm not sure it works as the only thing

The Safari Zone would be more interesting if there was an actual strategy to it. You're almost always better off just throwing a ball until something runs. But I don't even know where you'd begin to make the 3 options more meaningful in different contexts.
Maybe if each species had different starting behaviors. For example, a Chansey is going to be way more cautious than a Tauros who might be more easy to get angry.

I agree it would be better if it was a more complex system with more strategy to it. You could probably take better advantage of natures too.
You know how to get the attention and trust of some stray cats to let you pet them you have to move slowly, think every move you make, and maybe bring it food so it doesn't run away? It has a bit of strategy to it and knowing cat behaviour in general. What if you brought that experience to things like the safari zone?
You have different actions you can take to gain the trust of different pokemon to let you catch them.
