people wanted a dragon pokemon in Gen 1, and Dragonite is a gay, fat, children's show mascot. Genwunners were left with no other viable Dragon mons.
Except Charizard.
Then, Gen 3 came around, and we got Salamence. And all was right in the world; only the genwunners had moved on. They were filtered too hard by Gold and Silver.
