"Dark" and "Fighting" are not ideal translations. Evil type and Good type would be more correct. If samurai like Hariyama are one type, it follows that ninja would be of the other.

The front of the shell looks like their shoulder armor. I assume it’s meant to be evocative of knights than literal(the features that are not fuzzy are comparable to bony scales, like pangolins)

Actually most ninjas fought as a last resort. Most of the time if caught they would either try to shake off their persuers or distract them by leading them into traps they set

because the ninja/rogue/thief/assassin type is always associated with being stealthy, hiding in the dark, generally wearing dark clothing. if there's magic then they usually use dark magic. not a coincidence shiny greninja is also colored black
