I think I remember reading some old, like Gen 1-era article or interview or something, where Tajiri says he was really impressed by how some manga (maybe, it could've been another game series) gave all its main characters official heights and weights, and so wanted to emulate that with Pokemon too. Obviously I forgot most of the exact details of what he said by now, but that was the gist.

But yeah the sizes are weird. Some heights also seem way taller than their design looks like it should be.

Because they decided at the very start to design shit that was human-sized. That's why almost everything you find in the world is slightly bigger than the average kid, but usually smaller than the average adult.

Kaijumons (Tyranitar, Nidoking, Nidoqueen, Aggron, Rhyperior) can be bigger than they are already (Especially the Nidos... Nidoking wasn't made to be a short king. I would also find funny to see Rhyperior being like twice as big as everyone else, but that's just me)
Others like Charizard are good already with their size now
