Back then, in the beginning, was "I like anthro animal drawings". Then "I like anthro animals comics and cartoons", then "I like anthro lewd", then "I like anthro lewd RPs in the cons we make".
They were part of the anime fandom back in the day when some guys had overseas VHS, but then they fractured in the 90s after an inner civil war.
Nowadays, furry may be an umbrella term, because anthro affects everything today: movies, songs, cartoons, games. The furry fandom, by trying to be niche, ironically became mainstream, losing their "identity".
