The first half of that episode was fucking abysmal.
Only Pikachu vs Charizard final clash was good and even so it's carried HARD by nostalgia and clapbait.
As long as and ending does the bare minimum people will look back on things favorably because it means there was some decent pay-off to everything beforehand, even if everything beforehand was mediocre to bad.
All in all, it shows how important nailing the ending is. Because there's nothing that fucks up a series more than a shitty ending. Everything could have been god-tier until the last second, but as long as that last second is fucking awful, it ruins and stains everything that came before forever.
