On the contrary, ignoring the obvious medieval fantasy setting, early Pokemon took a lot of visual cues from DQ, I wish I still had that image that compared monsters from both

Bogleech is imo one of the few fans who understand pokemon. His suggestions aren't half bad either.

his entire gimmick is "dude just make icky gross rotting bugs and stuff haha it's so rad everything else is lame"
he never grew out of that late 80s/early 90s grossout fad

Probably but I'm too lazy to remember
Specifically really specific parts of nature and biology too, and some folklore and youkai thrown in for good measure obviously
Art wise it was all extremely inspired by Toriyama

Unfortunately yeah, the guy kind of slurps up any design that amounts to “gross/evil/toxic creature that lacks ‘traditional’ (marketable) anatomy.” Which, fine, pokemon definitely has some great designs that fit the model, but then you see him giving 10/10s to shit like the gen 9 car and tumbleweeds.
