You're kind of asking two questions in one there. I would play X, because I haven't yet but plan to and I even have a plan for roleplaying through it. I want to see for myself how good or bad it REALLY is, since I don't trust fan opinions on the games at all anymore after Sword pleasantly surprised me and Black 2 disappointed me. But "peak and soul" for me is probably BW 1, though Super Mystery Dungeon and New Pokemon Snap come close on the "soul food" front.
