Voltorb is negative(angry) electricity and Electrode is based on positive(happy) electricity which is why it turns upside down when it evolves, and the Hisuian forms inverse this. being based on a fundamental concept of electricity is cool
Simplicity is elegance. A simple design is not a bad design, it's just uncomplicated, which fits Voltorb and Electrode because their gimmick is to explode. It's very direct attack method. No frills. Just a terrifying exploding ball.
People always harp on about designs, but what about other things that make a mon cool? Electrode and Voltorb are cool because they're EXPRESSIVE. Their expressions are highly animated and over-the-top, and this works best with a simple design. They have a lot of energy to them and they do a great job making these guys feel volatile.
