>Terrible region designSinnoh is leagues better than Unova or anything after. Non-Jap regions suck ass.
>Awful Pokemon designsGen 4 had fantastic designs. Luxray, Torterra, Starraptor, Gastrodon pink, the list goes on and on.
>Terrible gameplay changesPhysical/special split was the single best change to gameplay in the whole franchise. It was a buff to 80-90% of the entire dex.
Gen 5 was a disaster and was what put me off of pokemon for nearly a decade until I finally played gen 6 in 2018 via emulator, and if that was bad gen 7 was the worst. It was so bad I never finished it and haven't bought a game since.

And is arguably worse, because you have to use the shitty bootleg gen 1 clones instead of actually good gen 1 pokemon for the entire game. at least XY let me use good pokemon and let me ditch the shitty ugly starters for actually good ones 5 minutes in.
Alola is way worse than either though. So many shitty baby tutorials you can't skip and cutscenes every 30 seconds. Absolutely the lowest point in the franchise.
