Yeah this is the issue. It was neat in 1996 when Gyarados was intentionally more unknown, so the irony of the shitty old rod catch evolving into the best one if you stuck with it for a little bit was a nice subversion. The problem is that in every subsequent game the “surprise” is ruined and Magikarp/Gyarados is one of THE most well known pokemon period, so getting the old rod is basically a free nuke and everyone knows not to bother with subsequent rods because they just yield water shitmon of the month #2383582 + you almost always get the super rod after having a competent surfer anyway.

They could've easily done this with one fishing rod by just restricting certain Pokémon to later in the region. If for whatever reason they wanted Horsea or Starmie to be rare, just only put them around Fuchsia or Cinnabar or whatever.

In the end, most players would only have teams of 3 or 4 real pokemon that they can actually use in battle. The rest are shitters with moves like rock smash and flash that no one actually wants to use in combat.
I feel like this is also one of the main reason why it's so rare to have a proper 6vs6 match in any of the games in PvE.

IVs would still cap out at 31 in every stat, but you'd gain them from battling Pokemon.

It's a system that discourages the use of Rare Candies, and makes your Pokemon get "battle hardened" throughout the story mode. And unlike the current EV system, it doesn't end up locking your stats in an ugly, useless spread.

EV training with power items is pretty ezpz, especially in the newer games where everybody in your party gain EVs from a battle. In SV I've just been taking 6 pokes that need somewhat similar EV training, put power items, make an encounter sandwich and go do battles.

IVs and characteristics feel half assed with how easy it is to just change a pokemon to be the best in something anymore. They're shit in-game too, since post game facility trainers had max stats on top of it all. You end up with pokemon who are perfect, or pokemon who aren't optimal, and essentially only ever fight one iteration of a pokemon (the one who is the best of its species and has maxed stats). No clue how you change it while keeping pokemon "unique", but IVs could be gone in the next game and I don't think most players would give a shit

Why would beating a Hariyama make my Gardevoir better at punching?
EVs should have always been incremented based on the attacks/defenses/healing moves, the player's monster used. Using more special attacks should grant more special attack EVs. Using more defense boosting moves should give more defensive EVs. Healing moves should give more HP EVs. Speed boosting and priority moves should give speed EVs. Etc.
That is intuitive to understand and makes sense when you consider EVs as 'muscles', compared to somehow your monster's strength being entirely reliant on what you fight rather than how.

Let's Go's catching mechanics. They feel terrible, and the game forces you to catch a ton to progress through the gyms. I would otherwise like Let's Go more if it didn't have that, plus some other things in the game I'm not a huge fan of.

Because field moves connect the two principal sides of the game, those being battles and overworld, as without it Pokémon is nothing more than bottom of the barrel dogfighting. Field moves, connecting your moveset with what you can do outside, also serve as a great progression tool (the stronger and more experienced you get the more freedom you take for yourself and your mons) and allows for a much more flexible game without the overreliance on roadblocks like every game after gen4. Item field moves, poke rides and poketch stuff don't have the same impact.

I don't play multiplayer so I always enjoy how IVs make each Pokemon individual. It makes Pokemon behave differently and even when it's not always noticeable it's certainly something that combined with the nature changes how the individual Pokemon plays so it's never the same.

I think it's cool that Pokemon gain EVs depending on who they battle but having no control on when they are assigned leaves you with random buffs at the end not too different from IVs. They should have let you control how they are assigned through regular gameplay. Having to battle specific Pokemon for EVs is ruinous for a playthrough.

It's just power creep. Before the split, OP items and abilities, min-maxing, improved movesets and gimmicks, the most common coverage was fucking hidden power. Nothing wrong with coverage but combined with the power creep every generation it's just too much.

You're right since they do go hand in hand, I mean for sure you could have a puddle of water splitting a route into two to force using surf as a roadblock, hoenn famously does this, but that's just the start of a winding, complex and much beloved routes that makes great use of field moves. Glorified hallways can happen with field moves too but it's much easier to make an interesting routes than not with them.

There are occasional cute interactions (Kangaskhan coming to rescue Cubone, Mareanie coming to finish off Corsola, etc), but these were tedious and often frustrating to take full advantage of. The number of pokemon who are eager to kill themselves during a chain is way too high.

Want Galvanize Geodude? You better get started on that setup taking advantage of Damp and a move that can only be learned in ORAS and USUM. You don’t have those? Just be lucky lmao.

For battle uniqueness, EV/IV/Nature don’t make Pokémon feel that unique. Whether it’s solo or multiplayer. Base stats and move pool basically drive battle uniqueness.

Thinking about it, CC only started to be an issue in Gen 8 imo, when it became a TM and got much wider distribution
The only other omnipresent move I have an issue with is Knock Off (which is just retarded and deserves a nerf)
Other widely distributed moves have either more manageable power (Shadow Ball, Ice Beam) or serious drawbacks (Focus Blast, Stone Edge) which make them less oppressive.

EQ imo as always been a non issue as it has recieved multiple works with flying types, will-o-whisp, levitate and intimidate mons. It's also been around for so long its pretty easy to predict what mons have it. In doubles EQ is a non issue.

Every one of Sinnoh's additions to contests was for the worse.
The Visual section is complete dogshit that forces you to shut the DS and look up which colors of fluff match the arbitrary theme, and then hurry up and shove 20 of them on your mon in 60 seconds.
The Dance section is completely worthless and is just wasting your time.
The Acting section has nearly no move combinations, something Hoenn's contests had in spades. I dont even think Jamming was a mechanic in Sinnoh's, and the 3 judges aspect just makes shit even worse.
And then the Poffin making is way worse than Pokeblocks, especially because there's no Poffin Master to help anybody that doesn't have 3 morons to get together to make Poffins with. It's no wonder they just let you buy this shit in Platinum.

Definitely the EV training system. It unfairly disadvantages 99% of all Pokemon, the most egregious example being Darmanitan's Zen Mode form. It lets Zacian and Calyrex ruin the metagame while otherwise good Pokemon are completely disadvantaged.

I additionally dislike how natures affect stats. I think they should only influence what foods a Pokemon likes.

The primary reason why I dislike EVs is because they have a 510 limit but the stat max is 252. It enables Zacian and Calyrex to ruin the metagame but doesn't give pretty much any other Pokemon a fair chance because you have to waste EV space boosting stats to counter an excessively specific threat. If EVs went up to 100 in each stat and you could max them all out the game would be much more balanced.
