They spawned at a way higher rate by default (I've literally already seen a couple wild honedges in game without even looking for them), you could use magnet pull to increase the rate, even if you didn't get the gem they still dropped useful metal rather than the absolute nothing sudowoodo gives so it's not a complete disappointment, and there were multiple savannahs so there weren't four guys in the same spot like is currently the case in the one biome we have where they spawn. PLUS the honedges were the only thing you had to grind, you have to grind other mons for the heads too now. Scythers are an ultra rare you know.
