most people don't even realize how large it is or how far east it is compared to North America

they're never going to cover a region in territorial dispute.
China, India, Pakistan, Israel/Palestine, and Korea will not be picked as regions.
The exception (or work-around) would be a 'fantasy south-east asia', like the setting of Dragon Ball.
