Seriously, could they be any more on-the-nose about fairy being a balance patch? Fire would burn a shitty little fairy to a fucking crisp. It makes zero sense how you can have it resist fairy, but not be super effective.

I have a theory. Pretty much all Dragon-types get access to Flamethrower/Fire Blast. My theory is that GF wanted Dragon users to truly feel the sting of Fairies by having less options to counter them, seeing as how Steel and Poison coverage moves were far rarer.

Explain why they couldn't just let Ice resist fairy. Ice is extremely grim defensively, if this stupid Fairy type only exists for balancing reasons, why not help it make ice serve a purpose defensively?

Also this is a retarded take, obviously balance was a motivator behind introducing fairy just like it was with introducing steel and dark.

It's because fairy type doesn't only exist for balancing reasons, in fact it has nothing to do with balancing at all.
Fairy only exists to be gay. Dragons are cool, ice is cool, gay hates cool.
Gamefreak made fairy to come out of the closet. And not the "heyyy everyone, this is Raul, my boyfriend" kind of coming out either, the "OH MY UNHOLY SHITBALLS I'M SO ADDICTED TO CUM ALL OF A SUDDEN WHY OH WHY CAN I ONLY FIT FOUR COCKS IN MY MOUTH AT ONCE" kind of coming out.
Otherwise they would have buffed ice.

The idea on paper is that Ice is supposed to have a glass cannon playstyle, being able to hit the highest amount of pokemon (28% of the dex) for super effective damage at the cost of being frail AS paper.

The PROBLEM with that idea is how the vast majority of Ice-tpes have the stats of slow, bulky defensive pokemon. On top of that one thing that REALLY bugs me is how pretty much all Water-types get access to Ice Beam/Ice Punch, removing the one niche Ice has.

yes it does, stop pretending otherwise. whenever someone wants to sing the praises of fairy type they always talk about it balancing fighting and dragon because that's all it has. it doesn't have good designs, hell it doesn't even have coherent theming.
fairy type is a marketing ploy and a half-hearted attempt to balance the game.

Furthermore, I think Water's ability to learn Ice moves throws off the balance of the starters. Fire naturally owns Grass, but for Grass to get clapped by most Water types as well? Pardon the pun, but that's cold.

I never saw a fairy have special resistance to dragon powers in anything besides Pokémon let alone beat a dragon by itself. Unless you count elves as fairies but, even then that has to be a really badass elf.
