psy/spe split makes more sense intuitively. and categorizing both fire punch and flamethrower as special moves is dumb. making fire punch physical and flamethrower special makes more sense and adds more variety than blanket categorizing all fire as special.
even kid version of me thought pokemon used psy/spe split pre gen 4 and was wondering why gen 3 absol's crunch did dogshit damage despite being a biting physical attack

The worst part of the split was leading to move bloat because now we need more moves to fill the type+stat slots at various intervals where before you really only needed say, Ember/Fire Punch or Flame Wheel/Flamethrower/Fire Blast but now you need Ember/Flame Burst/Flamethrower/Fire Blast as well as Flame Charge/Flame Wheel/Fire Punch/Flare Blitz. But it's more intuitive upfront that punching a dude uses your attack stat.

Correct. Also if you actually played the game you would know Gengar is better in Gen 3 anyway because it doesn’t have to fight Pokemon that can pull Sucker Punch out of their asshole and rely on Focus Miss for any decent coverage.

I don't know why they didn't just make Assist unable to call Revival Blessing, Assist already has a list of moves that it can't call from and the two moves existing at the same time is already speculative.
