Is there any point in playing the mainline gen 1-4 Pokemon games that aren't Yellow, Crystal, Emerald and Platinum?

no, it was fun back then because you could trade with other kids in school who had the other edition.

Yeah, every third version has some missing Pokemon, usually the version exclusives so you still have to buy or trade with the main versions.

I don't know about gen 4, but Yellow and Crystal don't offer THAT much to warrant ignoring the first wave of releases. Emerald does a ton, but Ruby and Sapphire are still largely the same. I guess if you want to see more Aqua or Magma you'd play the associated version.
