I feel like 'story' is good for a series, but should be opt-in.
Skyrim has plenty of story beats. But it's up to the player to chase them down. GTA is the same way. And if Pokemon is going to be 'muh open world' going forward, I think it would benefit from similar game design.

Edgy bad ends where you get killed by wildlife, possibly after witnessing them crush or begin to devour your pokemon. Bad ends where you get your pokemon taken away by the bad guy team and they either execute you and dump your body, brainwash you, or imprison you and leave you to rot. Abrupt bad endings where you screw up a puzzle and the next second you get crushed by a falling rock, or you drown, or drawn out ones where you're just trapped in a cave with no way to get out. And all of them play up the fact that your player character is a child or teenager and are have switched from confident adventure to terror and panic

Ah, but that's the clever bit- that never happens. When you get down to your last Pokemon they become invincible. You literally can't lose a battle. Especially on easy mode where your Pokemon can't faint.

I disagree but I do think that there should at least be different outcomes. Like in games where your rival becomes champion before you you should be able to beat him there if you beat the game fast enough and you have to defend your title instead.

I think a pokemon game with bad endings would be cool, but just single screen bad ends whenever you fail important battles, if you lose normal battles it's just fine. I'm talking about losing against a team leader/admin or failing to confront the legendary and all that.
After you get the bad end you appear back in the last pokemon center like if you would if normally fainted, don't lose any money, but any progress you made is reset(maybe you could combine this with only being able to save at certain points)

Should do the PLA thing where you can still fight pokemon even if your team all faints. Except, if you lose you just get mauled and dragged into a cave, never to be seen again.

There are more than enough gory, dystopic and crappy franchises like dark souls or game of thrones, go play that. I love Pokemon the way it is, sometimes a bit more spooky like in gen I but otherwise uplifting and idealized ;-P

NTA but this is better for immersion though imo. If you don't care about immersion you might as well just turn Pokemon into a microtransaction filled battle simulator.

Pokémon will never introduce a permanent Nuzlock; closest you'll get is a new building with a rule that says battles in this building that result in a fainted Pokémon mean you have to release that Pokémon or not use it again in the tournaments in the buildings.

What you're asking for would be suicide, it's the equivalent of telling the player to delete their save file if they lose, but you want them to enforce it? Suicide. The Pokémon Company, Nintendo, Creatures Inc and Gamefreak would never agree to it.
