It has the best story, characters, and region of any Pokemon game. The new Pokemon are amazing but lets chalk that up as subjective. It's a real shame for all the people who never played it because they just listened to others instead of making up their own mind. They really missed out.

There were some cool interactions, but grinding for hidden abilities was tedious at best and painful at worst (jumping through hoops to prevent mon from suiciding). It was also annoying that you couldn’t catch more than one mon in a chain. Hell, even simply catching a mon for a dex entey could be a pain at times when they wouldn’t stop calling for help (an animation that also can’t be skipped).

SOS battles and by extension Totem battles are the best wild Pokemon mechanic. I don't like increased shiny odds in general but putting them in SOS feels marginally better since at least it feels like you work for them. I never liked horde battles or sky battles. I do like safari zones, island scan, and hidden Pokemon, especially the ones with egg moves. It feels like the right balance of effort to reward.

Its not just dialog, but shotty dialog, dumb girl complimenting the player he can tie his shoes or simply to make sure you follow the linear path for like 5 mins. They weren't perfect, but you could feel they absolutely had a vision behind them, which is something Pokemon games have had since gen 2. Like most Pokemon games, they were released half-finished and it shows. USUM fixed some of the issues at the cost of creating some.

People hate on Ohmori, but I've never had the feeling he was the problem. SM, SV, and even some aspects of SHSW, are all full of amazing ideas that feel held back by how quickly they have to rush out a new game every year. I'd love to see what would happen if he were allowed to make a Pokemon game and had proper time to finish it.

Don't presume to say I haven't played the previous games, or think they're all held to the same standard. SM had railroading and was handholding, but to act like it's something that is solely unique to it, is false. The previous gens more or less followed to same template, it's not like you could've anywhere on the map at any time during those games. I've never denied that. All 3 games let you ignore that order. My only problem with Paldea is that the ordering of bosses is retarded. While gen 1 made you go out of your way to do stuff out of order, gen 9 makes you go out of your way to do stuff IN order.

Wild Pokemon spawn at pretty high levels in SV, especially in areas intended for late game. The level increases from gym badges are really generous too.

There was some spikes in difficulty, which I enjoyed because I've never been challenged in any other pokemom game before. There is no intended order. Eh, by the end of my playthrough it felt like a normal pokemon game, which is to say piss easy but expectedly so. At least I got to enjoy the difficulties along the way, which I have never experienced in pokemon before.

Yeah, maybe I could clear the higher leveled gyms with below average team of level 20 mons, I don't really give enough of a shit to, but I could. That said, there's a already a path that's railroading me to do it anyway in the intended order, so it really doesn't matter.

I do appreciate the couple of bumps along the way, it makes the playthrough memorable. Mela was fun to try and overcome because much of my team was fire-weak and I was too stubborn to make any other Star boss my first fight.
But it was also kinda fun to box my whole squad and use Pokemon that weren't trained at all. I had a Smack Down Larvitar just for Iono.

It's not a choice unless you look up a guide beforehand. The game just throws bosses at random levels at random spots around the map. You're not going to get any sort of smooth progression by just walking around the map, you have to constantly be bouncing back and forth.

The game isn't this huge ass maze, it's leads from one section of the map to the other, it's fairly to easy to see where you're supposed to go most of the time. The difference is you can decide if you want to or not.

Depending on what gate you start at, again, it's fairly easy to see how one path leads into another, with only a few odd out the way gyms here and there, but it's still fairly straight forward.

I did Mela at level 12. That's literally the point of open world, go wherever and do whatever. I didn't look up what was ahead of me, I didn't even know there would be a base there, I was just exploring and found it and beat it. First try, too. There is no intended path.

The player isn't doing anything, I challenged the ice gym as my third gym because my starter happened to evolve into a fighting type, I was level 36 when I got there simply by walking towards there and there was no braincell needed to beat it.

You only need to know the type chart, just have this not be your first game and you're good to beat the whole game with an underleveled team.
