Yeah, if each game didn't let you transfer/trade between i'd probably think of each one more like an individual adventure but i've always just self-inserted and treated every MC as the same character.

I've never understood why people argue about the 'best' main character cause to me they've always just been blank slates. Unless you're looking at the anime/manga versions, they don't have any individuality or traits beyond those that you assign to them.

No, I use the characters' real name and see them as distinct adventures each characters have. But since there are male and female characters, I sometimes headcanon things a little bit. For example, I like to imagine that Leaf was friend with Red and Blue and had her adventure the same time as them. Red ultimately became the Champion but it was Leaf who defeated Team Rocket. Stuff like that.
